Fossil fuels such coal, oil and natural gas continue to dominate power generation in South Asia along with large hydropower. With some restrictions on new coal power plants, imported LNG's role in the energy mix may increase. Renewable energy targets have been adopted across the region. While India has added renewables at pace, deployment needs to be accelerated. Universal energy access remains out of reach as costly power generation continues to make electricity unaffordable for less affluent segments. An increased reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels threatens further power tariff increases while increasing subsidy burden for governments.
