Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Islands

Australia has the highest uptake of rooftop solar globally. It is the largest exporter of metallurgical coal and LNG, and the second largest exporter of thermal coal. The Australian government is investing heavily in new natural gas projects.

Renewable energy sources supply 40% of New Zealand's energy needs, with the rest supplied by imported oil, gas and coal. While the Pacific Islands region is rich in renewable energy resources, many countries rely on imported oil for their commercial energy requirements. Energy consumers pay some of the highest rates for electricity in the world. (Subscribe to the IEEFA Australia newsletter here.)
