Launch event: Indian States’ Electricity Transition (SET) 2026 report

IEEFA and Ember launched the Indian States’ Electricity Transition (SET) 2026 report in New Delhi on 23 February, bringing together policymakers, utilities, industry leaders, and civil society members to discuss the next phase of India’s power sector transformation. The report assesses 21 states, representing 95% of India’s electricity demand, across decarbonisation, power ecosystem readiness and performance, and market enablers. 

This third edition of the SET report evaluates 21 Indian states across three key dimensions: ‘Decarbonisation’; ‘readiness and performance of the power ecosystem’; and ‘market enablers’. The findings highlight broad-based progress across states while reflecting their diverse transition pathways, underscoring the need for coordinated action and targeted interventions to sustain momentum in India’s evolving power sector transition.

Building on earlier editions released in 2023 and 2024, the SET 2026 report incorporates refined parameters, updated datasets and recent developments in India’s power sector to capture evolving state-level dynamics. It highlights the growing divergence in how states are responding to rising electricity demand, scaling renewable energy, strengthening grid and distribution companies performance. 

The moderated panel discussion focused on identifying priority actions that can help states accelerate clean electricity deployment, manage demand growth, and strengthen the overall resilience of power system, while supporting national climate objectives.
