Kimiko Hirata is the Executive Director of Climate Integrate, an independent non-profit organization established in January 2022. Prior to Climate Integrate, she worked at Kiko Network, a Japanese climate NGO, from 1998 until 2021, and has experience in research, advocacy, and NGO network management.
After the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear disaster in 2011, Dr. Hirata launched a multi-pronged national campaign to fight against coal in Japan, which culminated in the cancellation of 17 planned coal plants and built shareholder support for a climate shareholder resolution targeting Japanese banks in 2020 and 2021. The resolution was the first of its kind in Japan, and it achieved a shift in the climate policy of Japan’s major banks. Hirata received a 2021 Goldman Environmental Prize from this work.
