The global gas industry has its sights set on Latin America, both as a source of new gas supplies, and as a locus of new demand. Dozens of new gas import and export facilities have been proposed, with even more waiting in the wings. What are the prospects for the gas industry in Latin America? Are there smarter and more secure energy alternatives for a region struggling with the goals of economic development and climate neutrality?

Ricardo Baitelo

Ricardo Baitelo is a project manager at Instituto de Energia e Meio Ambiente (IEMA), a Brazilian think tank dedicated to a just energy transition in the energy and transport sectors. There, he coordinates initiatives on the universalization of energy access in the Amazon and for the Gas+Energy Coalition, dedicated to the transition of the Brazilian Energy Matrix to renewable sources.

Andres Bayona Insignares

Andres Bayona is an entrepreneur and union leader focused on promoting and fully developing new energy markets, especially natural gas, biogas, and hydrogen in Mexico and Latin America. Bayona holds 32 years of international experience in business creation, management positions in multinational companies, and in opening up new markets. He has participated in guilds in the natural gas sector and interacted with national and international suppliers, authorities, academics, and businessmen from the energy, industrial, and vehicle sectors.

María Marta Di Paola

María Marta Di Paola has been working in Argentina for more than a decade on issues that link economics and environmental impact as part of the Fundación Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (FARN) from September 2009 until February 2022.

She is coordinating Argentina's NGOs that are part of the Global Gas and Oil Network (GGON) and is co-founder of Sociedad y Naturaleza. She also carries out research and teaching tasks at the School of Agronomy (University of Buenos Aires).

Ana Maria Jaller-Makarewicz is an energy analyst for IEEFA’s Europe team. Her research focuses on topics related to gas and LNG, as well as other relevant European energy issues.
