New South Wales

Liddell coal-fired power station is closing in 2023 to be replaced by a battery. NSW Treasury expects the cost of natural disasters will be $15-$17 billion per year by 2061. The state plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Queensland

Queensland’s renewable energy target is 50% by 2030. The state is home to Adani Group’s Carmichael thermal coal mine under construction, and remains heavily reliant on LNG exports.

South Australia

South Australia is leading the world in rooftop solar. Coal-fired generation has completely exited. By 2050, it wants to generate 500% of its energy needs from renewable sources.

Victoria

Victoria is targeting 50% renewable energy by 2030. Coal-fired generation is decreasing with the early closure of Yallourn coal-fired power station, to be replaced with a 350 megawatt battery.

Western Australia

Western Australia has the world's largest carbon capture and storage plant. A green hydrogen facility is coming online in 2025 and the Asian Renewable Energy Hub is under development. LNG/gas is a significant industry.

Northern Territory

Natural gas makes up the majority of energy use in Northern Territory with further projects planned. The Territory is aiming for 50% renewables by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.
