The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking an experienced professional with deep knowledge of and experience in the climate and renewable energy sector. The role will provide technical and economic clarity to IEEFA’s analytic and policy assessment work in Asia with the task of evaluating how regional and country decarbonization and energy transition plans are proposed to be designed, implemented, and financed. A key focus will be on the role of renewable energy technologies and systems in achieving these objectives, considering both current and future economic factors and the necessary financial backing. The candidate should be driven, capable of independent work, adept at multitasking, prioritizing tasks, and adhering to deadlines without much supervision, all within a remote work setting. A strong dedication to IEEFA's mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable energy economy is essential.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Research renewable energy and energy storage technology implementation issues such as permitting, planning, grid interconnection, public/private investment models, and integrate these into holistic policy research papers and commentaries of countries’ renewable sectors.
  • Peer review and provide critical analysis of reports and commentaries, and ensure that IEEFA’s research is of a high standard.
  • Work closely with the Regional Director, Asia, to develop impact strategies and monitor the performance outcomes of IEEFA’s work relating to renewable energy.
  • Build industry, government, regulator, and finance contacts to understand different perspectives to better inform your analysis.
  • Establish and engage with relevant stakeholders in private and public sectors within countries, industry, and across the Asia-Pacific region and represent IEEFA at meetings and industry events.
  • Provide insights to the media and respond to requests for views to assist in building an informed public media narrative on renewable energy over the short, medium, and long term.
  • Conduct financial analysis, financial modelling, and market analysis in Excel. Create and update PowerPoint presentations for public, media, and industry briefings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Regional Director, Asia.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Seven or more years’ relevant experience in energy (utilities, renewable power developer) with a focus on renewables, and/or finance with a focus on clean energy.
  • A degree in finance, economics, accounting or engineering and/or with professional certifications (e.g., CFA) or appropriate and relevant market-oriented experience in lieu of those degrees.
  • Deep understanding of different renewable energy market business models as used in various countries. Experience in areas such as corporate PPAs, grids/micro-grids, utility vs community scale renewables, etc will be an advantage.
  • Understanding of energy policy, investment policy, permits/licenses, regulation on energy sector development, operations and consumer behavior.
  • Competence in presenting insights on a technology’s techno-economic viability and how various energy transition solutions will impact the country’s energy systems.
  • Proven skill in clear and effective communication, both verbal and written, in English. Knowledge of one or more Asian language will be an advantage.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse team of colleagues or partners, with ability to constructively influence and guide thinking on complex technical, economic, and financial matters.
  • Professional proficiency in writing in English within analytical, policy and persuasive formats.
  • Good understanding of basic finance, economics, and quantitative analysis.
  • High degree of technological proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word and demonstrated ability to learn new software and applications.
  • A collaborative professional who excels in teamwork, ready to join a dynamic team where unity and cooperative spirit drive success.

The successful candidate must possess a commitment to IEEFA’s mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable energy economy. The analyst needs to be self-motivated, able to work independently, able to multitask, set priorities, and meet deadlines with limited direction while working remotely.

Compensation

Full-time 12-month fixed-term employment contract with the option of extension by mutual agreement and a market competitive remuneration. Pay rates are also based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity.

Work Schedule

Full-time, 5 days/week with occasional evening or weekend work as required.

Travel

Some travel is required. All global team members attend IEEFA’s annual conference and international team retreat.

Physical Demand and Work Environment

Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back, and neck strain.
