Australian economists remind federal government of financial perils of NT pipeline project


Economists are arguing the Northern Territory’s experience in agreeing to underwrite gas projects should serve as a warning to the Federal Government not to do the same. The Commonwealth’s National COVID Commission has recommended it should also support some of the costs of building of new gas pipeline infrastructure. The industry says there’s precedent for that, but sceptics are warning that could leave taxpayers buying gas for which there are no customers.
