Tokyo-headquartered Electric Power Development Co. Ltd., through its J-POWER USA Development Co. Ltd. unit, and funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC jointly agreed to convert the 242-MW, coal-fired Birchwood Power Facility in King George County, Va., into a solar generation and energy storage facility, J-Power said in an April 2 news release.
The new project will be comprised of 50 MWac of solar generation and 190 MWac of energy storage. Construction will start in 2022 with commercial operations slated for 2023, according to a … news release from the parent company, which operates under the brand name J-Power.
“This project is part of J-POWER USA’s plan to increase our renewable portfolio and continue our efforts to build a cleaner sustainable energy future,” J-POWER USA President and CEO Mark Condon said in the April 2 release.
The agreement comes weeks after Birchwood Power Partners LP … confirmed the retirement of the Birchwood Power Facility, which the company said is based on “market trends and facility economics.” Subsidiaries of J-Power and General Electric Co. each own a 50% stake in the Birchwood plant, which was closed in March.
According to S&P Global Market Intelligence data, the plant last received coal in 2019, and except for December 2020 and January 2021 had rarely operated in the past few years.
