In Upper Midwest Wind Expansion, Xcel Sees a Plentitude of Suppliers

Ian Campbell for SNL:

There are more than 7,400 MW of existing uncontracted wind projects in development in the Upper Midwest, providing a competitive backdrop for a recent solicitation issued by Xcel Energy Inc..

Xcel Energy is seeking proposals for up to 1,500 MW of wind energy from projects located in Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, or Minnesota that meet the Midcontinent Independent System Operator Inc.’s required transmission interconnection and system upgrades by the end of 2020. The wind projects must also be 75 MW or larger.

According to an SNL Energy analysis, Xcel Energy could have plenty of bids coming, with 28 companies currently owning uncontracted projects that that meet that criteria. There could also potentially be unannounced projects that could also bid in, making the market even more competitive.

The solicitation will help Xcel Energy’s Upper Midwest system achieve its goal of having 63% of company’s energy sales to be from “carbon-free resources” within 15 years, the company said.
