Global capital flees thermal coal sector – think tank

More than 100 financial institutions have so far divested from thermal coal with “momentum building”, according to research by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

“Global capital is fleeing the thermal coal sector. This is no passing fad,” said IEEFA’s Tim Buckley.

Around 40% of the top 40 global banks and 20 “globally significant” insurers have backed away from coal, with one announcing divestment from coal mining or coal-fired power plants every month last year.
